The Austrian Connection
with Pia Palme (Vienna) and Dylan Lardelli (Wellington)

Supported by:

Pia PalmeSpecial guest artist Pia Palme will perform both old and new chamber music on a variety of recorders, including the newly developed contra-bass recorder made by Kueng of Switzerland. The incredible richness of sounds the instrument creates can best be appreciated by listening to the contemporary pieces written especially for this magnificent bass recorder. This concert will also be a celebration of the vast recorder repertoire, with the sublime beauty of Loeillet and Handel rubbing shoulders with groundbreaking contemporary works.

Dylan Lardelli

Dylan Lardelli will perform both guitar solos as well as accompany Pia Palme. Dylan is a regular guest performer with all the major orchestras and contemporary music ensembles in New Zealand.

The recent partnership of these two musicians sets the standard for expression and virtuosity amongst chamber music musicians, while perennially redefining themselves in their musical explorations. Pia and Dylan blend compositions for recorders, guitar and electronics into a sparkling succession of old and new music. The timeless beauty of Frescobaldi's Canzoni acts as a container for contemporary pieces. The experimental quality of the transitional period between renaissance and Baroque acts as a bridge to the music of our time: a structure that opens up hearing habits and allows for a fresh approach to both old and unusal new soundscapes.

The musicians are supported by a stellar ensemble of Nicholas Hancox (Viola), Ben Hoadley (Bassoon), Donald Nicholson (Piano, Organ), Philip Brownlee (Synthesizer) and Niky Clegg (Voice).

Performers: Pia Palme (Subbass Recorder, Kueng), Dylan Lardelli (Guitar).
