Hermione Johnson lives in Wellington and has an Honours Degree in Composition from Victoria University.
Jane Brown
Celloist
Jane studied cello at Trinity College of Music, London and has played many recitals and concerts both as an orchestral player and soloist. She came to New Zealand from the UK in 1999 and has since played with the Vector Wellington Orchestra and the NZSO. Jane also teaches cello privately and in local schools.
Jennifer Vaughan
Flautist
Originally from Auckland, Jennifer moved to Wellington in 2005 to study flute at the New Zealand School of Music. She has just completed her Bachelor of Music with Honours, studying under NZSO principal flute Bridget Douglas and Wanganui based Ingrid Culliford. She now teaches music in schools across the Wellington region and currently holds the position of second flute in the Vector Wellington Orchestra.
Johnny Chang
Violinist, Composer
Johnny Chang is a passionate supporter of new music that extends far beyond the conventional, commissioning and performing works by established and emerging composers. Johnny has worked extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, both in New Zealand (with 175 East) and on the US coastal cities of Los Angeles and New York, and in Germany.
Jonathon Berkahn
Caprice Arts Trust - Composer, Organist, Pianist
Jonathan Berkahn came to Wellington in 1990 to study at Victoria University. Since then he has acquired a B Mus in composition, a B Mus (Hons) in performance (organ, harpsichord, and fortepiano), and an M Mus in music history. He studied with Douglas Mews. He has recently acquired a PhD in music history.
He is currently a full-time parent, part-time freelance musician, and director of music at St Barnabas' Anglican Church, Khandallah. He has accompanied many choirs and soloists in the Wellington region and around the lower North Island. On Monday nights he sings and plays accordion at the Molly Malone's Irish session.
Justus Rozemond
Bass Clarinetist
Justus Rozemond is completing a graduate diploma in Music Performance at the NZSM, combining a specialisation in bass clarinet with conducting aspirations. Check out his free “bass clarinet and friends” lunch concert at St Andrews on the 10th of June!
Louise Cox
Oboeist
Originally hailing from Christchurch, Louise has been living the high life in Wellington for the past 9 years. As a regular in the local music scene, Louise has been playing in the Vector Wellington Orchestra (oboe) for the past several years, and up to recently was a member of the Central Band of the RNZAF (achieving the prestigious rank of Corporal). Outside of her music world, Louise enjoys cooking and aspires to one day have many cats.
Mary Binney
Composer
Mary Binney studied composition at the University of Auckland with John Elmsly and Eve de Castro-Robinson, completing a Bachelor of Music with Honours in 2003, and later returned to complete a Masters in Music Analysis under the supervision of Dr Fiona McAlpine. She was awarded a prize in the 2001 Lilburn Trust Composition Prize Concert, has had works performed by various local and international performers and ensembles, including Andrew Uren, Mark Menzies and Gateseven, has composed music for film and live theatre, and was co-convenor of the 2008 Nelson Composers Workshop. She is currently based in Wellington.
Matt Painter
Choral Singer
Matt is an experienced choral singer and a lapsed cellist. He has sung with The Tudor Consort since 2002, is a member of the Chapman Tripp Opera Chorus and has previously been a member of the choir of the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul and the choir of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland. He has also sung with Boutique Opera, Nota Bene, Number 9, and Voices New Zealand.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys photography, design and geekery.
Michael Norris
Caprice Arts Trust Foundation Artist - Composer
Michael is a Wellington-based composer. He holds composition degrees from Victoria University of Wellington and City University, London. He has held the positions of Composer-in-Residence with the Southern Sinfonia and the Mozart Fellowship, and currently lectures in composition at the New Zealand School of Music. In 2003, Michael won the Douglas Lilburn Prize, a nationwide competition for orchestral composers. He is also co-founder and co-director of Stroma New Music Ensemble. He has participated in composition courses featuring leading composers such as Peter Eötvös, Alvin Lucier, Christian Wolff and Kaija Saariaho.
