The Old Maid and the Thief - Menotti

Das Berliner Requiem by Kurt Weill

A contemporary opera from 1939 presented as a 1930’s radio broadcasting concert! It was one of the earliest operas composed specifically for performance on the radio. The opera was premiered on NBC in 1939, and was first staged in Philladephia in February 1941. The Kurt Weill Requiem is a 1928 cantata for wind orchestra and three male solo singers. In late 1928 Kurt Weill accepted a commission from Radio Frankfurt for a new work, which he duly fulfilled with Das Berliner Requiem (The Berlin Requiem). In collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. Weill selected several of Brecht's preexisting poems in order to craft what he termed a "secular requiem that gives voice to contemporary Man's feelings about death."
