Johnny Chang
Violinist, Composer
Johnny Chang is a passionate supporter of new music that extends far beyond the conventional, commissioning and performing works by established and emerging composers. Johnny has worked extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, both in New Zealand (with 175 East) and on the US coastal cities of Los Angeles and New York, and in Germany.
In December 2002, Johnny performed at Carnegie Hall, New York City with Ensemble Sospeso in their Brian Ferneyhough Perspective Concert. A few months later he toured with Southwest Chamber Music to New York City and Vienna (Austria) culminating in performances at the Schoenberg Institute. During the summer of 2004, Johnny was invited to perform John Cage's 19' 37.988"; for a violinist at LACMA for the exhibition, "Beyond Geometry, Experiments in Form 1940-70s". Recent performances include a new commission by the Berlin-based experimental music/theater ensemble Maulwerker in their Situationists concert as well as a new composition for singer and chamber ensemble for the Wandelweiser Composers Collective in Düsseldorf.
Mr Chang is also the co-producer of the Microscore Project with cellist Jessica Catron, commissioning and premiering 30-second works of composers from the US, Canada, New Zealand and Germany. The Microscore Project has attracted the attention of a variety of artists - from composers to instrument builders, poets to graphic designers, performermance artists to rock stars and from electronic artists to a hypnotist.
