Kiwi Contemporary meets Renaissance In Brevity
A series of chamber music concerts in Wellington and Lower Hutt sees exciting short new New Zealand compositions performed side-by-side with early music favourites and Renaissance classics. Some of the new New Zealand compositions in the concert have also been inspired by Renaissance works.
The IN BREVITY concerts will feature guitarist and composer Dylan Lardelli with soprano Felicity Smith, recorder player and composer Philip Brownlee, and violinist and composer Johnny Chang. They will perform Renaissance works including a number of songs by John Dowland interspersed with compositions by New Zealand composers including a new work Etude, by Philip Brownlee, as well as shorter works by David Farquhar, Hermione Johnson, Johnny Chang and others.
The first IN BREVITY performance will be 12.15pm, St Andrew's on the Terrace on Wednesday 8 October. The concert will be repeated at 7.30pm at St Paul's Lutheran Church (12 King St, Mt Cook) on Friday 10 October and then again at 7.30pm on Monday 13 October at St James Church, Lower Hutt.
The IN BREVITY concerts are run by the The Caprice Arts Trust (CAT), a charitable trust that provides an independent platform for performers and composers and is dedicated to performing the music that our artists themselves feel passionate about.
Since its inception, the CAT series has earned a reputation for top-calibre performances that foster communication between performers, composers and their audience. CAT aims to commission works by up-and-coming as well as established composers. The Trust has already presented a concert tour by the Bellatrix Recorder Quartet from Australia this year and engagements for 2009 include the highly acclaimed contemporary music conductor Lucas Vis (the Netherlands), who will work with CAT musicians and coach NZ conductors.
